Chapter 19

Professor Aker

ALICE found herself on the floor of some sort of building. Clayton was squatting beside her, and Tyler and Johnny stood nearby. She got up trembling. She had never done something so crazy in all her life. That man was about to shoot her. She shivered and dusted off, momentarily noticing that the day was not being very kind to her dress.

“Are you okay?” she heard Clayton ask.

“Yeah, I'm okay,” came Johnny's voice, surprising Alice.

She had little awareness of what had happened those last few seconds in the cornfield. After she pounced on the man with the rifle, and then the shot went off, she pretty much lost track. The shot was right next to her face and her ears were ringing. The man was far larger than her, and when he threw her off, he had elbowed her across the side of her head, and hit her hard in the ribs with the butt of the gun. The pain of it buckled her. Then when he stood up so large, and aimed the gun right at her, she squeezed her eyes closed for death. She couldn't hear anything over the pain, the ringing in her ears, the terror, and the pandemonium around her.

Now she looked over and saw Clayton looking with concern at Johnny, who stood, bent over to catch his breath, shaking, and sweating. He was completely pumped up on adrenaline. He must have done something she didn't see. Maybe there was a fight or something.

“Johnny?” she asked uncertainly.

“I'm okay. I just got scared,” he said through heavy gasps.

Alice thought that it was a very strange thing for someone like Johnny to say. She had never heard a man confess that he was afraid. But he must have done something when all the chaos started. She looked at him hard and puzzled.

“Well, we should try to get to the next step, right?” he said.

“Growl rowl,” Tyler explained.

“Tyler says we're at the university. In Ames,” Clayton translated.

Alice had never been to college, so this place was pretty foreign to her, and she wasn't much help figuring out where to find the professor. But Johnny had actually taken classes here, and knew the campus well, so in a short while they had found a schedule and learned where Aker would be. Soon they were standing outside a lecture hall at the Science Building. Students exited the room as the lecture had recently finished. Professor Aker was wrapping up with a student.

“Clayton,” Johnny said, trying not to sound insensitive, “considering what we just saw in the cornfield, I think it would be best if we can keep Tyler from popping in and out like that. Can we have him stay invisible? Can we do that?”

“I'm afraid it's not something we're controlling. I'm not allowed to instantiate without him, so we can't have him remain behind.”

“Growl, growl,” Tyler growled invisibly.

“Can he just stay quiet then?”

“Certainly,” Clayton said.

“Growl.”

“Alright,” said Alice, “let's go.”

When the student left and Aker was gathering up his notebooks they approached him.
